A mechanical heat recovery system is a simple device that keeps heat in while moving stale air out. The mechanical ventilation system involves the extraction of stale, moisture rich air from rooms such as kitchens, laundries, bathrooms and toilets and through a process of mechanical heat recovery, replaces this stale air with filtered air from outside that gets warmed up and can be re-directed into bedrooms and living areas.

A mechanical heat recovery unit uses the physics of heat transference to recover heat from air before it leaves a building and is expelled into the atmosphere. This heat energy is transferred across to incoming cooler air within a heat exchanger. Such a unit is usually  mounted in the roof cavity of a building and forms the heart of a system of fans, vents and ducting. Warm, moisture laden air is extracted from the bathroom or laundry, for example, and passes through a system of pipes where the latent heat in the air transfers across to a system of pipes which are bringing in fresh air from the outside. The process of passive radiation warms up the cooler air, and up to 93% heat efficiency can be achieved through this method. The incoming air is not only warmed as it travels along, but filtered before being ducted into bedrooms, lounge rooms or any other rooms required.

Mechanical heat recovery systems do more than just heat up air. As the system pumps air out, bringing with it odours, dust and other contaminants, another fan draws fresh air into the house structure resulting in an overall improvement in the quality of air within the building. This is most important in well sealed moisture-prone houses where air movement may be negligible and there can be a build up of organic contaminants and condensation resulting in mould.
