How does a Heat reclaim Ventilator Work? – Heat Ventilation

Heat Reclaim Ventilation Can Cut Down Your Heating Bills

A heat reclaim ventilator is a proven device that can be used to help reduce your winter heating bills, while at the same time ensuring that fresh, healthy air is circulated throughout your home.

Typically, in winter months, windows and doors are kept closed in homes as a means of keeping warm air and heat in, but this also stops air from circulating, and stale air from being expelled from the building. Everyday commonplace activities in kitchens, bathrooms and laundries such as cooking, washing etc. will generate moisture laden air and if this has nowhere to go, this air will condense on cooler surfaces and this can promote the growth of mould. Opening windows may help in managing air flow, but it will also let heat escape.

A heat reclaim ventilation system uses the physics of heat transference to recover heat from the air that is already inside a building. It then expels this stale air outside into the atmosphere to replace it with fresh incoming air. The heat reclaim ventilator will transfer heat energy across to incoming cooler air using a heat exchanger. This device is typically mounted in the roof cavity of a building and through a system of fans, vents and ducting, it moves air in and out of the building.

As an example, warm, moisture laden air is extracted from a bathroom and passes through a system of pipes. The latent heat in the air transfers across to a separate system of pipes which are bringing in fresh air from the outside. This air is effectively warmed up through passive heat radiation from the reclaimed heat. This warmer air is then filtered into bedrooms, lounge rooms or any other rooms connected to the ventilation system. The heat reclaim ventilator helps to keep down overall heating costs, while improving overall air quality in the home due to the filtered incoming air being cleaner and healthier than the air that is being expelled from the building.

With stale air being taken away from areas of high moisture, such as bathrooms and laundries, there will be a decrease in overall humidity within the home, which in turn helps to prevent condensation and the growth of moisture loving mould. The constant exchange of stale air with fresh air using heat reclaim ventilation also ensures that carbon dioxide and other toxins which may be present in the air are also removed.
